How to Plan a Field Trip

How to Plan a Field Trip

Planning a field trip isn't as difficult as you might imagine. Start with what interests your family and work from there. The chances are, if it's a field trip in which you would like to participate, so would other families. Arranging field trips is a great way to meet other members of the group and is a huge service to other homeschoolers.

Questions to ask the facility:

1. Is the facility a part of SCFD?
2. Is there a group discount? What is the cost?
3. Is there a limit to the size of the group?
4. Is a deposit required? Can families pay separate at the door, or does it have to be in one lump sum?
5. Is the facility stroller friendly?
6. What is the target audience for the field trip?
7. Are there study guides provided or online to help the students prepare for the field trip?
8. Is the tour self-guided, or will there be a tour guide?
9. Are there facilities to buy lunch or an area for a picnic lunch?
10. Where do we park?

Once you've secured a field trip (there is no need to have an exact number before you arrange a date and time), post an RSVP in the forum. Often you receive better turnout if you post the RSVP 2 weeks in advance. If the facilities require you to pay in one check, contact the treasurer for help in arranging a lump sum payment. If your field trip requires a certain minimum attendance for a discount, it is helpful to collect the money before the event to assure the discount. Otherwise, families can pay at the door.
